Wall sconces are wall mounted forms of lighting, they can be used indoors or outdoors. They can be found in many areas of the house and have many functions for their use of light. Wall sconces can be found on stairways to make sure the stairs are clearly visible, they can be found over paintings or other features in a room, to highlight them or to alternate lighting in a lounge or family area.Used correctly lighting sconces can make a room seem larger if they are placed high up the wall or can make a room feel smaller or more intimate. On the outside of the house, sconces can be found outside front doors, on a porch area or outside a garage door.
A wall sconce has a non-clear glass cover because it covers the glare of the bulb while also giving off a soft warm glow, they also help to direct the light to its intended direction. Wall sconces can shine downwards or upwards depending on where a splash of light is needed.
Choosing a wall sconce
Wall sconces will come with some mounting hardware and instructions. It is best to get a professional to fit your wall sconces and take care of any electrical work. But it is always important to have the location of the wall scones well thought out.
If you are fitting the lights beside a doorway, the fittings should not be on the side of the wall that the door opens into, or at least a door width from the doorway if they are, this is to save the lights from being damaged and so the view of the sconces is not inhibited.
Another factor when fitting the lighting sconces is the height of the sconces, if they are fitted to high with the light shining down the naked bulb may be visible will produce too much of a glare for the eye. This is also true of the opposite, if the sconce is too low and shining up the bulb may also be visible.
There is a million different styles of wall sconce lighting designs from rustic style sconces featuring stone or wood to more contemporary designs. It is important when choosing the style of the lighting sconce that it suits the decor of your house or of the area that it is going to be placed in, whether it is indoors or outdoors.
The size of the wall sconces you are going to choose has also to be a consideration, for instance if you want to place these wall lights to accent a nice mirror in a bathroom the sconces should be on the smaller scale as anyone using the mirror will only be a foot or two away. In a larger area such as a hall or a large room the wall lights should be on the larger scale.
Wall sconces come in a wide price range from a regular store purchased sconces to designer sconces, so how many sconces you choose to buy and how much you can spend on them will also be a factor.
