Sesame Street Characters List
73Sesame Street is an American children's television program that was created by The Children's Television Workshop. Sesame Street first appeared on American television in 1969 and almost instantly received high ratings. The idea behind the show was to give access to children, who were not yet old enough to go to school, a means of being educated through television in subjects like morals, numbers and letters. There was a great deal of research done before the show was first aired so as to optimize it to benefit preschool eduction while also being entertaining and a success.
The show was set in an inner city area and this made it feel very familiar to many of its young viewers. The show features many characters such as Jim Henson's Muppet's and different segments of the show such as animation, short films and comedy.
Today Sesame Street is one of the most viewed children's programs in the world and and has featured many celebrities such as Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts, Ricky Gervais, Ben Stiller, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash as well as many more.

Big Bird
Big is the main character in Sesame Street and is one of Jim Henson's Muppet's. Big Bird has been in the preschool show since its beginning in 1969. He is a very large bird, hence the name, being eight foot, two inches in height with bright yellow feathers. As he is a bird, Big Bird lives in a very large nest just off of 123 Sesame Street. He is performed by Caroll Spinney, although has been filled in for on some occasions, who has played him since the show started. Big Bird has many talents such as writing poetry, roller skating, ice skating and singing. Big Bird has a little Teddy Bear that he loves very much, called Radar that was given to him as a present by Mr. Hooper.
Elmo
Elmo, also a Muppet, is a three and a half year old furry red monster.Elmo didn't appear in Sesame Street from the very start but he did make his first appearance on the street in 1972, as Baby Monster. Elmo, today, is one of the most popular characters on the show with toddlers and has his own segment of the show that is directed at toddlers. Elmo has starred in two of his own movies Elmo Saves Christmas and Elmo in Grouchland. Elmo as a celebrity has been a guest on the Martha Stewart Living Show as well as the Rosie O Donnell Show, The Tony Danza Show and The View. Elmo is also the only non person to ever appear before the U.S Congress pleading for increased funding in Musical Education.
Oscar the Grouch
Oscar is another of the characters on the show, who is a Muppet, and is one of the creatures that are called Grouches. As well as Oscar being a creature called a Grouch, he also has a very grouchy personality doesn't really like people except for young children and some adults that watch Sesame Street. Oscar lives in garbage bin on Sesame Street and the reason for this is that Grouches and Oscar love garbage, it is their favorite thing of all. Oscar has been on Sesame Street since the very start, but in the first episode he was orange instead of green, when the second series started he changed to green. Oscar has a pet worm called Slimey and also in his Trash Can has a portal that can bring him to his home world, Grouchland a place that Elmo visits in the Movie Elmo in Grouchland.
The Count
The Counts full name is Count Von Count and he is a vampire, but not in anyway a scary one. He first appeared on the show, like Elmo, in 1972 and was brought into the show to help preschool children with counting and numeracy. The Count loves counting and counts everything that he sees or even hears such as Bats, cookies or anything at all that there is more then one of, this can be of much annoyance to other members of the show but for the viewers its very funny.
Snuffy
Snuffy, who's full name is Aloysius Snuffleupagus, first appeared on Sesame Street in 1971. He was made to resemble a Woolly Mammoth, minus the tusks, and in the first few series it was only Big Bird that ever saw him. This led to everyone believing that Big Bird was making Snuffy up and blaming things that went wrong on him, this went on for a very long time until 1985 when the Sesame Street Movie, Follow That Bird, was released. Since then Snuffy is seen by everyone and is Big Birds best friend.
Cookie Monster
The Cookie Monster is a blue furry monster with an insatiable appetite. He will eat anything from any kind of food to objects that aren't food such as televisions and wood, but as his name implies his favorite thing to eat is cookies. This voracious appetite of his can often be at the expense of other Sesame Street friends as he often ends up eating things that belong to them. Cookie Monster's main catchphrase is "Me want Cookie" and he has been around since the very start of the show.
Bert and Ernie
Bert and Ernie are two more of Jim Henson's Muppet's, they are room mates and they are responsible for a lot of the comedy and humor on the show. Bert and Ernie's comedy style is based in the classic formula of one straight man and one funny man, in this case Bert is the straight faced one and Ernie is the wisecracker. One of Ernie's favorite possessions is his Rubber Ducky which he uses for his bath times and also brings with him on certain occasions. Bert' family that is featured in the show is his twin brother Bart, his aunt Matilda and his nephew Brad.
Grover
Grover has been on Sesame Street since the first series although he had a different name and appearance, in that first series he was called Fuzzy Face and had green fur and an orange nose. When the second series started as with Oscar, Grover had his new name and look which is largely the one we see today. Grover also has a secret identity in that of Super Grover, Super Grover is a spoof of Superman and while he has some super powers he is a very poor super hero. When Super Grover tries to save someone it is usually he that ends up being needed to be saved.

I grew up as a Sesame Street kid. It was such a great show! My son watches it now, but it's just not the same. Big Bird was my favorite; I still have a stuffed toy Big Bird that my son now plays with! His favorite character is Grover.
One new character that I now enjoy is Abby Cadbby. She's really adorable and not as annoying as I originally thought. :)
I was also a Sesame Street kid. My daughter is an Elmo fanatic these days. Sometimes I think we must have every Elmo toy made. Though I sometimes tire of it, I am amazed by how much my daughter learns from the show. Great hub!
I didn't watch Sesame Street growing up but my husband did - now my daughter watches and just loves it, esp. Elmo. I think we have every Elmo's World DVD out there. We have gone to Sesame Street Live a couple of times and its always a cute show. As far as the tv show, I don't really like how they do Bert and Ernie animated - their funniest stuff is like the video on this hub where they are more live. Great hub on a great show!
I will always love Sesame Street. All the muppets, in fact. You never outgrow them. Thanks for the fun. Hub voted up and awesome!

My kids grew up watching Sesame Street and many birthday cakes were done in Big Bird, Elmo, and other characters. Now my grandsons are enjoying. Nice hub, thanks for creating.
