To make any living room in a home feel truly warm and cozy in those long winter evening you need some form of fire. This can be a gas flame effect fire, a wood burning stove or an electric fireplace heater. • Firstly the fire grate allows air to be drawn up through the fire giving you a fire that is hotter and burns better.
• The fire doesn't smother itself as all of the burned solid fuel and ash falls down through the gaps in the Fireplace grate and onto the fireplace floor which leaves you just with the burning hot fuel itself.
• The fire grate raises the fire itself moving it up nearer the chimney and because of this there is less chance of smoke coming into your home instead of going up the chimney.
• As mentioned earlier the grate assists in the air being drawn up through the fire, this makes lighting the fire a great deal easier.
• The fireplace grate contains all of the real heat so it protects the floor of the fireplace from heat damage over time.

The video above shows the principal of how the fire grate works. This brand however has an extra lower shelf for the fire starters. Whether it is kindling or firelighters you use the lower shelf will hold these. The space between this shelf and the above one allows the solid fuel to get the full effects of the fire starter also the weight of the solid fuel is not bearing down on the starters crushing them.

Although this model of fire grate is slightly different than normal versions of the fire grate, it does show how important the space below the fire really is.
