Dream interpretation can be a valuable way for us to analyze what our sleeping mind is trying to tell us, the meaning of dreams that we have can be a great way to realize our fears, anxieties, worries and help to overcome them.  Dreams can be made up of a combination of things we have experienced both lately and in the past as well as the things we hope and wish for and many more things besides.

What do Dreams Mean and the Most Common Dream Meanings

There are many different types of dreams and although we do not usually remember we all have several dreams every night, some people are excellent at recalling their dreams whereas others say they don't dream at all, which usually means they simply do not remember their dreams.  Some dreams can be very vivid and touch, taste and even smells can be remembered.  Some dreams can be terrifying and some can be a manifestation of our fears, real or imagined.  Dream interpretation can be used as a way to help us understand what our dreams mean and what our mind is trying to tell us.

What Does My Dream Mean?

Over time you can become quite adept at reading and understanding your dreams, you can train yourself to recall your dreams in detail and analyze your dreams, helping you to become more in tune with your body and mind.  There are many common dream meanings that people experience and when trying to understand what happened in your dream you need to analyze each part of your dream and read it in context.

Dreams tend to be a big jumble of many different things that are on our minds, they can be a mixture of what we have seen that day mixed up with something we are worried about or fond memories.

Vivid dreams can be quite frightening or equally amazing, dreams can also be in black and white or color and we all experience many different types of dreams throughout our lives.  Many people say that they have had, or regularly have psychic dreams that foretell something that is going to happen in the future.

Below you will find a list of some of the most common dream meanings to help you start understanding what your dreams mean.

What Does it Mean When I Dream About ...

Here is a list of some of the most common dream meanings that we have.

What does it mean when I dream about ...

  • My teeth falling out - if you dream about your teeth falling out can mean several different things from feeling anxious about your appearance to feeling powerless in some situation in your life.
  • Snakes - snakes can be seen as a symbol of sexuality and are some of the most common dreams, it can be symbolic of a repressed sexual desire or energy.
  • Someone - dreaming about someone you like is very common and while there are many meanings about dreaming about people you know it is thought that dreaming about someone you like is most likely because they are on your mind so often and usually right before you fall asleep rather than having a significant meaning.  However their actions and surroundings in the dream can be interpretated.
  • My Ex - dreaming about an ex is very unlikely to mean that you want them back, particularly if you are in a new relationship, similarly to dreaming about someone you know it needs to be interpretated with the surrounding of the dream, the feelings, location etc.
  • Being Pregnant - some people say that they dream of pregnancy when someone close to them is pregnant, dream dictionaries give the meaning, when a woman dreams of being pregnant she will have the means to buy new clothes and when a man dreams of pregnancy he is about to embark on a dangerous adventure.
  • Fire - dreaming about fire can signify a new beginning, a sexual energy or a transformation of some kind.
  • Water - dreams of water or dreams of drowning are also quite common, dreaming of calm waters can mean a sense of security and dreams of rough seas etc can mean inner turmoil.  Dreams of drowning can mean a feeling of helplessness or feeling that something in your life is happening that you are powerless to change.
  • Rats - dreaming of rats can signify feelings of guilt or envy that you are trying to repress or a person that you see as a rival or enemy although they may not be one in reality.
  • Cars - dreaming of a car crash can suggest that you feel that everything in your life is upside down at the moment, dreaming of being a passenger in your own car means that you feel the driver (if you know them) is in control of your life, alternatively if you feel happy in the dream about the driver of your car you are happy to have this person in your life or that you feel they are rescuing you.
  • Abandonment - Dreams of being abandoned by family members can mean feeling a great personal freedom than you are used to. Dreaming of being the abandoner foretells unhappiness around you in your life.

Remembering Your Dreams

It is possible to improve your dream recall, to start remembering your dreams more clearly.  You can train yourself to do so.  It is said that we have several dreams every night, but most people will recall only one (or none sometimes) and we then assume that, we only had one dream.  It is said that we can have around 8 dreams each night.

Dreams are fleeting, have you woken up in the night and thought to yourself "that was a lovely/strange dream" and tried to go back to sleep to continue the dream, only to find that you either can't or the dream has changed?  This happens often and you can work on controlling your dreams to some extent too.  Many people will wake up and immediately recall a dream, but if they try to recall it an hour or two later they will find the memory has faded and they can only remember snippets of the dream.  If you really want to remember your dreams then you need to keep a dream journal by your bedside and upon waking, write down everything you can remember.

The benefit of this if you want to know what your dreams mean is that over the course of a week or two you can see if any patterns emerge in what you dream about and using dream interpretation you can find out what it means!
